The infection can lead to corneal scarring and neovascularization, permanent endothelial dysfunction and corneal edema, secondary glaucoma, and cataract. The applicant, a participant in the current Herpetic Eye Disease Study (HEDS), proposes to be a Regional Coordinating Center for Phase II of the Herpetic Eye Disease Study. Phase II will consist of two randomized, double-masked clinical trials and a non-experimental Recurrence Factors Study of ocular herpetic disease. Current treatment options for herpetic eye disease are much more effective than what was available in the past. In an ideal world, patients would be protected from the devastating sequelae of herpes zoster ophthalmicus such as neurotrophic keratopathy, keratouveitis, postherpetic neuralgia, and even acute retinal necrosis.
