On a really beautiful afternoon in June well over 30 Museum Friends found their way (not without some difficulty!) to the 493rd Bomb Group Museum on Debach airfield. We were met by Richard Taylor, the owner of the land, his wife Prilly and a group of enthusiastic volunteers, who showed us round the site. The play is about the US Air Force in East Anglia and it would seem that Debach Airfield was just the perfect place to perform it! During 1942 – 1944 the US Army occupied the area and built the airfield and the first planes were at Debach in 1944. The first mission was on D-Day in June 1944 and the last was in April 1945. We had all sorts of military vehicles going around the farm tracks and much fun for all. On May 28th 2017, following our previous successful convoys, we had another military vehicle run around the Farm tracks of Debach, taking approximately 1 hour. The weather was extremely kind to us and we had a record number...

ww2dbase Debach airfield (or US Air Station 152 as it was to be officially known to the USAAF) opened in April 1944 with the aircraft of the American 493rd Heavy Bombardment Group (equipped with the latest Consolidated B-24H and B-24J Liberator bombers) arriving during the following month.
Even so records show that when fully up and running some 2894 USAAF personnel were based here in late 1944. It appears that DEBACH was the last wartime bomber airfield to be built for the USAAF,and the first operations took place on D-Day. SOMETHING REVEALED?
